Anger and Rage

Do you get that surge of fury build up inside you? Do you find yourself getting uncontrollably angry in all sorts of inappropriate situations – to the point where your relationships are suffering, and possibly your work, too? What’s probably pushing you over the edge is “life” and all the multiple frustrations that disrupt your day, throwing your mind into turmoil as your stress and anxiety levels go through the roof.

For most of us, we cope; but in some cases, a person’s natural anxiety levels are high to start with. They are like a pressure cooker, ready to explode, with the slightest raise of temperature causing an overload. “Red mist” descends as the blood pressure rises, adrenaline pumps around the body, and they burst into a flying rage, destroying everything around them – even those they love and care for.

Continued anger can make us ill: heart disease, depression and high blood pressure have all been linked to us. In fact, depression has been described as “anger turned inward”.

Rage is an instinctive response to the sense that we are under threat, either physically or emotionally. Anything that challenges our dignity, or threatens the control that we hold over our lives, can trigger anger at a deep level. Add to this the demands of the hustle and bustle of modern-day living – driving, deadlines, mobile phones, kids – and it’s easy to see why some of us are walking time-bombs.

Hypnotherapy cannot change the day-to-day demands of Life, but what it can do is help diffuse the underlying emotions that trigger anger in the first place.

Let’s say a person was bullied, or felt unfairly treated as they moved through Life. Eventually, they may come to believe that attack is the best form of defence, and carry this strategy with them every day. When criticism is levelled at them unfairly, they immediately respond with their learned pattern of behaviour – which is no longer appropriate.

Anger is in us all at some degree or other. Anger is a legitimate reaction to the wounding of the soul. We can turn this anger into ourselves through depression, self-harm and the like, or we can turn it on to others, thereby hurting those we love the most – the silent surrogates for those we would not confront in the past.

I have had several cases where clients have presented this problem. We have had great results in gaining more control of anger levels, to the point where we have been able to save relationships and, quite possibly, jobs.
